The short answer
An impact wrench has a square drive — usually 1/2 inch — that sockets push onto. It makes a lot of torque and it exists to undo and tighten nuts and bolts. Wheels, suspension bolts, rusted machinery.
An impact driver has a 1/4 inch hex collet that bits click into. It makes far less torque but far more speed, and it exists to drive screws without stripping the head or snapping the shaft.

Reach for an impact wrench when: changing wheels, taking off suspension or exhaust bolts, freeing rusted bolts on a mower or trailer, assembling anything with lag bolts.
Reach for an impact driver when: building a deck, hanging drywall, driving long screws into studs, assembling flat-pack, anything where a drill would stall or chew the screw head.
