By the fortieth cut, your hand has stopped closing properly.
Anyone who has pruned a real number of branches in one afternoon knows the sequence. The first hour is fine. By the second, the web of your thumb is complaining. By the third you are squeezing with your whole arm, resting between cuts, and quietly re-defining which branches actually needed doing.
And then there is the branch that is simply too thick. Hand shears will not close on it, so you fetch the loppers. The loppers will not reach into the middle of the bush, so you fetch the saw. The saw tears the bark because you cannot get a straight angle on it. Half an hour later the job is done badly and your hand is finished for the day.
These take that whole sequence and replace it with a trigger. A brushless motor drives the blade through branches up to 30 mm — a little over an inch — in one clean pass, as many times as you like, without your hand doing any of the work.

Ignore the number printed on the battery. The packs carry a voltage figure stamped on by the manufacturer that does not describe anything useful about how the tool performs. Judge it by what it actually cuts — 30 mm, cleanly, repeatedly — and not by a sticker. We are not going to repeat a number we cannot stand behind.
30 mm is the honest ceiling, not a target. It will take a 30 mm branch in green wood. Dry, dense, seasoned hardwood at that diameter is asking a lot of any handheld pruner, and forcing it is how blades get chipped. Step down a size or reach for a saw — the tool will last far longer for it.
These are powerful, and the blade does not care what is in the way. A powered pruner will go through a finger as easily as a stem. Keep your free hand behind the blade, never hold the branch at the cut point, use the safety lock whenever you are not cutting, and keep it away from children. Read the manual before the first cut.

Questions people ask first
How thick is 30 mm, really?
A little over an inch — about the thickness of a broom handle, or a decent apple-tree water shoot. It covers the overwhelming majority of what you meet pruning fruit trees, vines, roses and ornamental shrubs. Anything thicker than a broom handle is a job for a saw regardless of what tool you own.
Will it get through a 30 mm branch?
In green wood, yes — that is what the figure describes. On seasoned hardwood at the same diameter you are near the limit of any handheld powered pruner, and you will get a better result stepping down a size or using a saw.
Does it take Makita batteries?
It uses the same slide-on fitting as Makita's 18V packs, so if you already own that style of battery it will mount. Makita is not affiliated with us and does not endorse this tool — the fitting is described here only so you know what fits. Two packs are included, so you do not need to own anything already.
Is it worth it for a small garden?
Honestly, if you make a dozen cuts twice a year, a good pair of hand secateurs is the better buy. This earns its place when you are pruning by the hour — fruit trees, vines, a hedge of woody shrubs, or anywhere arthritis makes gripping the problem rather than the branch.
