The branch is six feet long and two inches thick. Getting the big chainsaw out for it feels absurd so it stays where it fell.

How thick a branch will it actually cut?
As a rule, comfortably up to about the bar length — so wrist-thick on the 4 inch, arm-thick on the 6 inch. Push it past that and you'll be cutting from two sides and working the motor hard. For anything bigger you want a full-size saw.
Do I need to buy batteries?
No — they come with it. And because it uses the common Makita 18V-style slide mount, it shares that fitting with our extended ratchet wrench. If you already own tools on that platform, your packs slide straight on.
This or the pole chainsaw?
Different jobs. This one is for what's in front of you and on the ground. The pole chainsaw is for what's above your head, so you never climb a ladder holding a saw. Plenty of people end up with both, and they don't overlap.
