Two things beat you on a car. The bolt that will not move, and the bolt you cannot reach. They are not the same problem — and one tool has never solved both.

You know how it goes. You buy a big impact wrench because a lug nut beat you once, and it lives up to that. Then a month later you are lying under the same car trying to get at the alternator bolt behind the pulley, and the wrench is four inches too fat to fit in the gap. So you go back to a hand ratchet and turn it a sixth of a flat at a time, with two knuckles against the block, for twenty minutes.

Or the reverse: you buy the slim cordless ratchet because access was the problem, and the first properly seized suspension bolt stops it dead. Neither tool is wrong. There are simply two jobs, and this kit is both tools — on one 21V battery platform, in one bag, for less than buying them separately.

The two tools, and what each one is for

The impact wrench — for force

1/2-inch square drive, brushless motor, 1000 N·m (738 ft-lbs) of breakaway torque and variable speed to 2400 RPM. This is the one for lug nuts that have been on since the last tyre change, suspension bolts that have seen ten winters, and anything you would otherwise be attacking with a breaker bar and your body weight.

The extended ratchet — for access

3/8-inch drive on a 6-inch extended neck slim enough to feed into the gap behind a pulley or under a fuel rail. Brushless, three speed and torque settings up to 100 N·m (74 ft-lbs), forward and reverse, a safety lock, and a manual mode so you can finish by feel.

One battery for both

Two 21V 4.0Ah packs and a charger come in the kit, and both tools run on them. One on the wrench, one on the charger, and the job does not stop while you wait. Both tools also carry an LED and a charge indicator, which matters when you are working under a car.

Straight talk before you buy this one

Breakaway torque is for undoing, never for setting. A thousand newton-metres will happily strip a thread or snap a stud. Crack fasteners loose with the wrench, then tighten them back with a proper torque wrench to the figure in the manual. This is the single most common way people damage a wheel hub with a tool like this.

Use impact-rated sockets on the wrench. Chrome hand sockets are not built for impact and can shatter. The deep black sockets in this kit are the impact ones; the bright chrome ones are for the ratchet.

And be honest about which tool a job needs. The ratchet is an access tool, not a breaker — 74 ft-lbs will not shift something seized. Crack it loose with the wrench first, then reach in with the ratchet. Used the other way round you will just stall the ratchet and wear it out.

Questions people ask first

Do I really need both tools?

If you only ever change wheels, no — the 1200 N·m impact wrench on its own is plenty. The moment you start working in an engine bay rather than at a wheel, access becomes the harder problem, and that is what the ratchet is for. Most people who do their own servicing end up wanting both.

Will it take my wheel nuts off?

Yes. Passenger-car lug nuts are usually torqued to somewhere around 120 N·m, and rust makes them harder to crack than that, but 1000 N·m of breakaway is a long way clear of what a car will throw at you. Use the impact sockets, not the chrome ones.

Can I use my existing batteries?

Two 4.0Ah packs and a charger come with the kit, so you do not need to. Both tools use the same 21V slide fitting as most of the cordless range here, so packs move between tools.

What if it isn't right?

Thirty days, money back, no restocking fee. It ships from inside the United States, so it arrives quickly and goes back easily.

The bolt that won't move, and the one you can't reach.

Both tools, both batteries, the sockets and the bag — on one battery platform. Free US shipping and thirty days to change your mind. More on the car and garage page.
