A trimmer cannot cut a lawn flat, and a mower cannot get near a fence post. So most people own both, and use each one for about fifteen minutes.

That is a lot of shed space for half an hour of work. It is also why small yards, courtyards and the strip beside a driveway get neglected — pulling out a full mower for forty square metres of grass feels ridiculous, so it waits until it is long enough to be a proper job.

This is one tool that does both. It is a brushless cordless trimmer with a 180° rotating, three-way tilting head — so it trims and edges like any good trimmer. Then it clicks into a wheeled base and becomes a 12-inch mower with three cutting heights. Change over in seconds, no tools, and the whole thing folds down to store.

One battery or two — pick by the size of the lawn

One battery

For a courtyard, a front strip, a small back lawn, or for someone who is mostly trimming and only occasionally drops it into the mower base. One 4.0Ah pack and the charger. If the job is twenty minutes, this is the sensible choice and you can add a second pack later.

Two batteries

For an actual lawn rather than a patch, and for anyone who does the whole yard in one go — mow, then swap the head and do the edges. Mowing pulls far harder on a battery than trimming does. One pack on the tool, one on the charger, and you do not stop halfway.

Everything else is the same

Both kits include the trimmer, the wheeled mower base, the charger, a 3-metre reel of mowing line, a metal saw blade, two swing blades and the rest of the nine-piece accessory set. The only difference is how many batteries are in the box.

Straight talk before you buy this one

Twelve inches is a small cut. This mows a courtyard or a small lawn well and it will genuinely save you owning two machines. It is not a substitute for a full-size mower on a real lawn — if your grass runs past a few hundred square metres you will be walking a lot of lines. For that, the 21-inch gas mower is the honest answer.

About the battery label. The packs supplied are marked "598V" on the sticker. That is a marketing figure printed by the factory and it is not the real voltage — these are 18V lithium packs, 4.0Ah each, on the common Makita 18V-style slide fitting. We would rather tell you that here than have you unbox it and wonder.

The saw blade in the accessory set is for woody stems and scrub, not for lawn. Fit it deliberately, wear eye protection, and keep both hands on the tool when it is on — a spinning metal blade on a long shaft deserves the same respect as a brush cutter.

Questions people ask first

How is this different from your other 3-in-1 trimmer?

The 3-in-1 cordless trimmer is a handheld tool — it trims, edges and cuts weeds, and that is all it does. This one adds the wheeled base, so it also mows flat to a set height. If you only need the edges finished, buy that one. If you want to stop owning a separate small mower, buy this.

Do I need tools to swap between trimming and mowing?

No. The trimmer clicks into and out of the mower base by hand. Changing the cutting head for a different blade does use the supplied spanner, but the mow-to-trim change does not.

Will my existing batteries fit?

If they are Makita 18V LXT-style slide packs, yes — 4.0Ah to 6.0Ah is the sensible range. It does not take the older Ni-Cd packs or the G-series batteries. Batteries are included either way, so this only matters if you want spares.

What if it isn't right?

Thirty days, money back, no restocking fee.

One tool where a mower and a trimmer used to live.

Trims, edges, then clicks into the base and mows. Free US shipping and thirty days to change your mind.
